Insanity and Senseless Postings

Well, I think I've finally been pushed over the edge. First my processor fan bites the dust, and now my roommate's gettin' some, which means I should stay out of the room or else be a inconsiderate jerk. I thought about posting a long senseless thread here a la my recent work on BoxJam's forum, but, lucky for you, I've decided against it. *grumble grumble cursed public clusters grumble grumble*

Poor boy. Would a new Toonbots episode help?

Yes, it did. Thank you very much.

Ouch. Even had to use NT to view it, I see.

Yeah. For some reason the Sun machines in this cluster won't let me login in any sort of graphical mode (shows the loading whatever Desktop screen, then dumps me back to the login prompt). I'm doing all of my actual work via ssh to my box in the dorm, but it's kind of hard to see graphics on a text console.

Are we talking X-terms connected to one or more Sparc servers? At work, usually rebooting the X-term will do it (some small memory leak in the tftpboot file eventually crashes the things after multiple connections from the chooser level). Every six months or so, it's a server problem (usually after they've futzed with the configuration), forcing us to reboot the troublesome server. All in all, a pain in the neck.

Still, FWIW, I'd rather use one of our buggiest Solaris servers than any of the VAXen. ;)

I think it's all local. It's a row of Ultra 10's, and they're running some sort of X login manager. The logins are kerberos, though, so I dunno. I haven't used Solaris much, so I really have no idea what's going on, and I don't think that the powers that be would really appreciate me rebooting the machine.

Ah. I should have realized that no one but our company could have been taken in by the "diskless workstation" network model. :)
