Jan. 21 (Singin' in the Rain)

I was very impressed by today's Toonbot. Nice to see the range of positions available for Hick, but the gradient made it particularly aesthetically appealing, as well as adding to the nostalgia factor. I'll probably be humming that for awhile now.

Yeah, I was pleased. The gradient makes it look really nice, and the grey background seems to make it easier for ImageMagick to dither the lines, so they end up looking a lot smoother than they can when it's black on white. Or at least I thought so.

That's not the range of positions available to Hick, actually. If you look at the source, I could have moved him any way I like -- which isn't very elegant, because it's all a matter of giving alternate coordinates for the ends of his arms and legs. What I want to end up with is some means by which I can describe a cartoon at a very *high* level of abstraction, and I don't have that yet. In other words, I'd really like to be able to say "move his head over and down a little" or "he throws his arms in the air" or something.

But I'm at least starting to see how I might do that eventually. That's what's making this fun. It's completely open-ended. Accretionary style.

Thanks for sticking around. Hee, hee.
