Three Men in a Boat [Jerome K. Jerome] - 10.0

So we went to the bookstore the other day (a satisfying change from Ponce, of course, which has none, but the English-language selection is both limited and very pricey here) and I bought a book I'd been meaning to read for some time: Three Men in a Boat (To Say Nothing of the Dog), by Jerome K. Jerome. It's one of the quintessential humorous descriptions of Victorian England and I enjoyed it immensely.

Ah, the low-bandwidth life. It has its moments.

i love that book! i became aware of it maybe 10 yrs ago, when i caught a bbc-made movie sort of thing on pbs - michael palin, tim curry, stephen moore - it was just wonderful. one of those great things that one catches by chance, which then disappears entirely.

there is also a sort of time-traveling book inspired by this called 'to say nothing of the dog' - it's rather fun as well (although ultimately more satifactory to cat lovers).

Connie Wilson's "Three Men in a Boat, to say nothing of the dog" is actually the only reason I'd heard of JKJ's book. So when I saw the latter sitting there on the shelf in Budapest, I had to pick it up.

Turns out you can get it for free, of course, online. But it's more satisfying to read a bound copy, and it's also more convenient to hold than the laptop.
