Pink Panther Paycheck in Pounds

News worth sharing with the remnants of the jihad. Humble self has been officially commissioned by the British firm Flametree Publishing to write three spreads for an upcoming "large format, comprehensive, high quality encyclopedic art book," to quote the blurb. Two seperate entries on Disney wartime shorts/features, 500 and 700 words respectively (I'm trying to split the two) and one on the Pink Panther, for 700 words, and all to be accompanied by glossy illustrations. What's more, I'm getting paid one hundred quid per 1,000 words, plus a complimentary copy of the book when it comes out (and a discount for additional copies to line the wolverines' playpen). So hooray!

Why not? As I said, it is an encyclopedic work, covering the roots in the early 1900s all the way to web animation and weird CG from India. The Pink Panther is significant as one of the last notable theatrical short series, coming when most of the major studios had shut down and television had taken over, marking a return to pantomime humor, sporting a distinct design, and one of the most familiar icons, whether in film credits or as a solo character, or even hawking pink paints or doing karate to the letter K on Sesame Street.

Disney only produced one specifically wartime related feature anyway, "Vicory Through Air Power." The period is notable, however, for Dumbo, Bambi, the odd pseudo-documentary starring Robert Benchley called "The Reluctant Dragon" and showing Alan Ladd as a smiling storyboard artist at a time when half the studio was on strike against Walt, and the "Good Neighbor" South American film Saludos Amigos and its sequel Three Caballeros.

ah - i spaced on the "disney" part - despite my affection for the pink panther, i figured there might have been a trifle more attention to the war...well, what can i say - i'm exposing my ignorance again.

As I said, there's two pieces, one on Disney war shorts and one on features (of which there's less to be said, and yet that's the longer piece). Plus a seperate general "Doing Their Bit" piece, and besides the whole thing is chronological, catching notable works or shifts from each timeframe. If Indian CG gets a chapter, and Power Puff/Spongebob/Kim Possible share a chapter, then Pink Panther deserves one.
