Huh. It hadn't occurred to me that they might have been nesting in the fallow spaces on the disk, foraging on the nectar thereof. (wouldn't they get dizzy?) I am taken back to my younger years with Toynbee (well, not with _him_, strictly, but in the presence of some of his work) among the catalog of civilizations challenged from without by the inexorably advancing ranks of those finding life for a time unbearably hard on the steppes. Some built walls to keep out the barbar races; some sought to assimilate the newcomers; some saw their trees filled without end with fluttering hordes.
