and perhaps you should view it as a tribute, rather than outright theft.....you know, sort of an "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery" sort of thing.

Iron Shamrock had a lot of potential. I think you lost interest before you really got into it, but I liked a lot of Iron Shamrock, particularly the electromagnets.

you guys are just making this all up to confuse those of us not familiar with the strip, aren't you?

oh and emsworth - if you can get boxjam's forum to come up, there is a link to hotel grim in the 'son of boxjam sightings' thread (but must confess, i only looked at that one - which had possibilities, i thought)

Haven't been able to get BoxJam's forum to come up all week. Probably just e-mail him this weekend in regards to the anniversary.

I lost a scanner. my computer is ancient. i still have several strips to scan. i didn't lose interest until several months went by without technical ability. the plan is to bring it back M-W-F, while doing Hotel Grim T-Th.

What ho! Certainly not averse to the return of "Iron Shamrock." Uncertain about this new strip, though having just gone through the few archived strips, would say that it can be better described as goofy than dark, apart from the skeleton and black voo-doo doll or whatever he is. Bizarre at times and mildly unnerving, perhaps, but not really dark.

So sue me, I can't think of the right adjective to characterize my reaction -- "dark" was the first thing I came up with in a hurry. The skeleton is cool. The fat man eating mayonnaise gives me the heeby-jeebies.

...

Does it occur to anyone that any description of nd's work tends to sound made-up? "Yes, yes, the electromagnets were excellent, but the fat man eating mayonnaise and the little girl on the moon were too strange for my taste. I'd like to see a return of the forty-foot spider."

um... a secret about the fat guy eating mayonaise... those were filler from random bits i did for a friend. He will never return. so jump up and down for joy. when I get far enough ahead with the strips, i'm removing those from the archive. And they made my readership drop down to 10% as well. Live and learn.

---

and it all sounds made up to me. of course, I was the one making it up...

I'm reluctant to ask exactly why your friend would be amused by mysterious obese men eating mayonnaise. Still, all according to taste, I suppose.

::wolverines jump up and down and eat the rest of the mayonnaise::

Huh. Now that you mention it, maybe I did, subconsciously.

Or something.

Welcome back. Your new toon is ... stranger than Iron Shamrock, that's for sure.

Sorry. Not to my taste. The surreality, sure. I like that, as you know. It's just a lot darker than I like.

it's dark? I just thought the name was dark. Seems goofy to me. Oh well, no worries.

Pardon, but if you don't mind my asking, exactly where *is* this new venture, if I may ask? This was the first I'd heard of it. A quick glance at the old "Iron Shamrock" page revealed a notice regarding the new strip, but no link.

ou es la chat de ma grandmere?

> Tu pantalones son en fuego! Ay! Muchos monos son muerte en la carniceria

ok, i can handle this:

two pantalones (is that like calzones?) son in fuego (tierra del fuego?) (ok - pantalones must=parents) much mono of the son (ie, he's got mononeucleosis real bad) kills in a carnival in butte, montana.

so - some kid, whose parents are in tierra del fuego, is now doing great (standup comedian? 3-card monte man?) at a carnival in Butte, despite having mono.

well - that's nice....

sometimes you can be really strange, emsworth.

Re: ou es la chat de ma grandmere?

> sometimes you can be really strange, emsworth.

Harrumph. I'm not the one who came up with that translation. Not sure if your Spanish skills are rustier than mine, or more likely, you're being deliberately obtuse, but the original meaning is as follows: "Your pants are on fire! Hey! Many monkeys are dead in a butchershop in Butte, Montana!"

Makes only marginally more sense than the other, but at least it has nothing to do with mononeucleosis.

mouse Mon Apr 29 18:08:01 2002
Re: ou es la chat de ma grandmere?

my spanish skills are pretty much non-existant. thought about running it through babelfish, but then i decided i could mangle it by myself.

Ahh. The fact that you had used Spanish for the earlier message titles had confused me. I never use babelfish myself, so I forget that other people may use it.

Whereas others use the multi-babeler.

Their trousers are in fogos! Ay! Many monkeys die inside carniceria he of Hillock, Montana!

Re: ou es la chat de ma grandmere?

ooh, that's fun - saves all the bother of typing things in over and over.

babelfish is actually pretty good at simple tasks (such as 'here is the hotel'), and will give you a basic idea of more complicated sentences (if you limit yourself to one interation) so you at least have _some_ idea of what's going on - so it is a handy thing.

but some days its more fun just to make it up yourself.
